Making a decision about tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are the most common childhood surgeries and are usually performed to treat snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea or frequent tonsillitis. In fact there are some 12,000 performed in Victoria annually.

For some parents/carers, making the decision for their child to have surgery can be difficult. Recovery, pain, bleeding and readmission after surgery are some of the concerns. Parents and carers can have different opinions regarding the need to surgical removal the tonsils and or adenoids. This can result from community attitudes, to access to surgery, families understanding of the risks and benefits and concerns about post surgery care. Our Specialists are sensitive to these concerns and will talk you though the risks and benefits to your child’s health.

There is a lot of information to take in and it can be overwhelming and difficult to remember. Therefore, we have dedicated this section on our website to provide our patients and families help and resources that aim to improve the outcome and recovery from surgery.

We have included a link to interviews with parents and children where they talk candidly about their surgical experience. These are worth watching and will provide some insight to post surgery recovery.
