Mr. Mark GuirguisENT Surgeon

Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Surgeon

Mr. Mark Guirguis’ medical journey began as a medical student at Monash University in 1988.  He subsequently finished medical training in 1993 and went on to have further training at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.  From there, he commenced general surgical training and subsequently specialised in ear, nose and throat head and neck surgery, obtaining his fellowship from The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2004.  From there, his family and Mark spent a year in London, where he undertook a specialty head and neck fellowship and returned to Australia in 2005, commencing private and public practice in Melbourne and Ballarat.

Since arriving in Ballarat, Mark Guirguis has enjoyed being a part of the Ballarat community and servicing the paediatric and adult ear, nose and throat needs of Ballarat and the surrounding regions of Western Victoria.  He has a subspecialty interest in thyroid disease and head and neck cancers, and he takes great pride in setting up the head and neck cancer service in Ballarat, where most head and neck cancers can be managed locally. He still holds appointments at St Vincent’s Hospital and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, occasionally, complex cases need to be performed at these hospitals. Mr. Mark Guirguis also enjoys teaching medical students, holding appointments at the University of Melbourne, Notre Dame University and Deakin University and being a medical examiner.  He is involved with several committees for the Department of Health and Human Services.  He performs public ear, nose and throat and head and neck surgery at Ballarat Health Services and Maryborough Hospital, along with St Vincent’s Hospital and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Mr. Mark Guirguis practices privately in his clinic at Ear, Nose and Throat Ballarat, St John of God Hospital and Ballarat Day Procedure Centre.

Outside of medicine, Mr. Mark Guirguis thoroughly enjoys living in Ballarat with his wife and four children and being an active member of the community.  He is heavily involved with the arts in Ballarat, sponsoring the Guirguis New Art Prize, and being a board member of the Art Gallery of Ballarat and Chairman of the Art Gallery of Ballarat Foundation. His children share a keen interest in sport, so he has had the fortune of coaching several junior basketball and soccer teams over the years.  This has certainly helped maintain his skills with paediatric patients in persuading and encouraging their cooperation during a consultation.

Mr. Mark Guirguis also takes great pride in establishing Ear, Nose and Throat Ballarat, a complete service for ear, nose, throat and head and neck surgery in Western Victoria.
